Workshop targets local youth

|     James Kon     |
TEN local youth are taking part in a Youth as Agents of Behavioural Change (YABC) Workshop, being held at the D’Anggerek Serviced Apartment, until December 8.
The six-day event aims to boost the capacity of youth and volunteers involved with the Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) through YABC activities which address issues of gender, diversity, social inclusion and violence.
The workshop was officially launched by Director of the BDRCS Haji Mohd Hilhamd bin Haji Johari yesterday.
Haji Mohd Hilhamd said, “The BDRCS has identified youth engagement as one of the key areas of our work, and it was agreed that the BDRCS will promote youth-led activities such as the YABC training of peer educators and youth in school safety programmes, in collaboration with the relevant ministries and other youth-oriented organisations such as the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.
“This is also in line with the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies’ (IFRC) proposal, endorsed at the 9th ASEAN Senior Officials’ Meeting on Youth (SOMY) in May 2018, and the Project Cooperation and Funding Agreement made on September 7.”
He advised the participants, “Don’t waste your youth, and use it to your optimum capacity. Irrespective of what you want to become in life, you should never shirk from giving your best of efforts in whatever you do. Our youth have a duty to fulfil, in remaining genuine, honest and capable of upholding good moral values.”
Also present at the launching ceremony was Reema Chopra, a master trainer affiliated with the IFRC.
YABC is IFRCs’ flagship initiative to promote a culture of non-violence and peace (CNV+P). The programme, created in 2008 empowers individuals to take up an ethical leadership role in their community by triggering a process of self-transformation among participants resulting in positive and lasting changes of mindsets, attitudes and behaviours.
