THE Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports yesterday called on the Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) to be more self-reliant in the face of many challanges.
Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (R) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yusof said like many other associations, BDRCS must be more resourceful especially in finding ways to generate income to finance activities, events as well as governance of the association.
Speaking during BDRCS's National General Assembly yesterday, the Minister said in Brunei, the BDRCS is synonymous with first aid services (Perkhidmatan Pertolongan Cemas).
"First aid training programmes is an opportunity that can be commercialised as products to generate funds."
"With the establishment of Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent First Aid Academy last year, I am made to understand that the academy has already received recognition from the International federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Society (IFRC)."
The minister added that the academy has also been awarded international recognition for issuing first aid certification.
The BDRCS also working together with relevant agencies in the country to prepare first aid programmes that are more comprehensive and suitable with the national module.
"The BDRCS play an important role in providing first aid services and I am proud of the developments made by the association," said YB Pehin Dato Haji Halbi.
"Approaching its 68th year, the association has been successful. Youths are given the opportunity and trust to become leaders in the national executive board and this is progress in closing gap between leadership of past generation and future generation."
The minister said the BDRCS must remain alert to the challenges in leadership and continue to improve the capacity of its members to ensure the objectives of the association will remain relevant as well as to provide outstanding service to the nation.
YB Pehin Dato Haji Halbi also expressed his gratitude to the BDRCS in providing assistance during national disasters.
"The society is also active in providing assistance to those in need by organising charity and humanitarian projects," he noted.
YB Pehin Dato Haji Halbi hoped the BDRCS will continue to be commited in providing first aid services as the fundamental platform to the humanitarian movement.
