The Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) together with 17
million volunteers from 190 national societies across the world will be
celebrating the World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day on May 8.
Carrying the theme 'Everywhere for Everyone', the World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day is an opportunity to recognise the amazing work of volunteers and staff who go out saving lives and changing minds every day.
The BDRCS was established in 1948 and was first known as the Red Cross Society of Brunei (PPMNB).
The association was recognised under the Brunei constitution in 1959 and was under the supervision of the British Red Cross Society until 1984 when Brunei Darussalam achieved independence.
Founded by Al-Marhum Pengiran Temenggong Sahibul Bahar Pengiran Haji Mohammed, the society's original aim was to support one of the decisions in the Medical Conference in Cannes, France on May 5, 1918 which urged for the increased establishment of the Red Cross and Red Crescent globally In 1977, PPMNB became the 170th member of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).
After Brunei's independence, the PPMNB was separated from the supervision of the British Red Cross.
In 1991, the association became BDRCS and was officially registered under Section 83 (3) of the Societies Act as a volunteer body based on the requirements of the Geneva Convention.
On November 6, 1996, BDRCS was officially recognised by the International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC). The BDRCS currently has 1,700 members including 800 Red Crescent Cadets always ready to serve.
